Short Film Bound for Sundance

Award winning filmmaker, Lawrie Brewster and screenwriter Sarah Daly, of the production company New Age Film Ltd, are having their work exhibited at the world renowned Sundance Film Festival.

This achievement began with Irish screenwriter Sarah Daly’s submission of a short comedic script, to the world’s first open source production company, hitrecord.org, brainchild of Hollywood star Joseph Gordon-Levitt.

The story; Morgan M. Morgansen's Date With Destiny soon came to the attention of Joseph Gordon-Levitt himself. The recent Golden Globe nominee so enjoyed the piece that he recorded a voice over reading, which was first uploaded to the site. The response from members was hugely positive.

Seeing the potential of the project, Gordon-Levitt created a visual spine for the film, starring himself and up and coming actress, the beautiful Lexy Hulme.

Lawrie Brewster then took the video and conceptualised a visual world in which to express the story, through graphics, artworks and animation. His Art Nouveau inspired depiction of the story, replete with Cello playing felines and ornate Zeppelins, combined with the various contributions of other HitRecord members such as illustrator Jenyffer Maria, whose work he incorporated, resulted in a visual spectacle that was lavish and beautiful.

The results of the collaboration soon found the film’s director, Joseph Gordon Levitt, contacting Lawrie and Sarah to discuss the development of the project. Never before had either experienced the opportunity to work with Hollywood professionals, Lawrie describes the experience.

“It was among the most exciting experiences I’ve felt in the world of filmmaking. I had admired Joseph’s work for years, and to find him complimenting my own, felt almost surreal. Joseph is a remarkable artist, and his website hitrecord.org encourages an egalitarian ethos of artistic equality, which I found expressed personally in his positive and encouraging attitude. It is a remarkable honour to work with him as a director and I have deeply enjoyed our conversations during the development of our film.”

Meanwhile Sarah Daly had this to say of the experience,

“The experience has been incredibly rewarding. First of all, to see my story brought to life by such a variety of talented artists all over the world, and also to be afforded the chance to work with Joseph Gordon-Levitt, a hugely talented actor and also a real visionary for the future of media. I can't speak highly enough of HitRecord; its ethos and its members. I just can't wait to see what happens next."

Yet none of this could have prepared either for the surprise yet to come, when they learned that the film developed would be featured at the Sundance Film Festival. There, among other collaborative artists, the film is undergoing further refinement, including the production of a music score by Nathan Johnson; best known for his work on the Brick soundtrack.

In an even more astonishing development, the film has garnered praise from legendary actor and Sundance founder; Robert Redford. On January 29th, the finished piece will be screened at a special HitRecord event at Sundance, curated by Joseph Gordon-Levitt.

As for the future, Lawrie Brewster tells us,

“With the completion of this film, there is every possibility of further collaborative development with Joseph and the other great artists of hitrecord.org. Meanwhile, we are making wonderful personal connections that we hope can only assist in the development of independent film in Fife. It shows that it is not necessary to fly to the United States to find the necessary talent or recognition for creative accomplishment. This opportunity will only lead to further developments for the creative arts in Fife, and with organisations such as Creative Fife there to help nurture talent, there’s no reason, why anyone else can’t experience similar success from our Kingdom.”
